Most people interact with AI on a daily basis, often in straightforward ways like autocorrect and predictive text.
AI won't eliminate all jobs, but it will undoubtedly transform the nature of everyone's work.
The key skill to hone will be delegation. What we currently refer to as "prompt engineering" will soon become as natural as giving tasks to an incredibly talented and resourceful intern.
To get ahead of the curve, consider focusing on the following:
Communication — As AI continues to advance, the way we interact with it will increasingly resemble human conversation. Recall the days when Google search queries had to be carefully structured—word order and spacing were crucial. Today, Google can predict your search query with 90% accuracy.
Diagramming — Boxes, circles, and arrows aren't just doodles; they're how we convey complex concepts to each other. Mind maps better reflect our non-linear thinking processes. Imagine being able to sketch out an idea and then having an AI elaborate on it. In the future, you'll communicate more while saying less.
Data Analysis — Generative AI can produce more insights and data points in an hour than you could in a year. But how will you sift through this wealth of information? While AI can assist you, you'll need to guide it to extract the specific insights you're interested in.
These are foundational skills to master. There will always be resistance to acquiring new abilities and staying current with market trends.
The upside? That same AI—think of it as a virtual intern—can also assist you in developing these skills while on the job.
If we engage correctly with AI, it could become a better teacher for leveraging its own capabilities than any buddy system your manager might implement.
